Working Fire 3-23-07

At 09:30 an alarm was received for a fire in a residence in the old mill housing section of the borough. Station 28 volunteers and paid staff arrived minutes later finding a 2 story private dwelling with smoke. The fire self vented and flashed just as the engine crew was placing the first line into operation. The fire was located in a pre-planned target area with several similar detached exposures just a few feet away. This prompted the first due officer to transmit a 2nd alarm (CHFD's version of a working fire assignment that fills companies from the CAD). Mutual aid companies were fast to the job and as always did great helping us out. Several dogs were pulled from the fire and brought to a local vet for treatment. Searches were negative, no injuries reported.

FDNY Update

For those who have asked, I received my final letter and "the call" from FDNY this past week informing me that I have been selected for appointment to the position of probationary firefighter with the Fire Department of New York City. I was given the option to report this Monday (March 26th) to begin the academy however due to the very short notice & current obligations I have chosen to accept the hiring but defer my start at the academy. I will be reporting into the next academy class that is scheduled for the summer. Thanks to all who have voiced their ongoing support and guidance! FDNY FF# 03604

3/16/07

The day began w/ a tragic pediatric code and with the snow came a steady full day of runs and not a whole lot of down time. Station 28 remained staffed overnight and into Saturday by volunteers. Our newest Probie FF was also around to cook us all up some excellent soup for dinner. (hint, hint other probies)

3/10/07 Structure Fire: Elderly Nursing Home
Today, 3/10/2007 at 0409 hours, a fire alarm was received at dispatch for L.S.C. Nursing home. First arriving officer found smoke in the building, and determined origin in the basement. A second alarm assignment was immediately struck, with addition of and EMS Response.
The Fire was contained to a room in the basement, and held in check by sprinklers, until CHFD engine crew could go to work.
Smoke had filled the hallways in the wing above the fire, and staff started moving patient bed's to the front of the building, which is a separate wing of the facility.
EMS Crews started the process for relocating patients to other facilities. A total of 8 patients of the original 24 were moved off site. EMS made plans to evacuate the entire facility if needed, which would have added an additional 36 patients to the mix (total= 60 pts).
A separate EMS Sector was started in the front of the building. A mutual aid call out was made, bringing a total of 11 transport ambulances, and one fly car paramedic to the scene. (courtesy of colchesterfd.com report)
