3 Working Fires Saturday for Station 28

CHFD Volunteers were kept busy with 3 seperate working fires Saturday!

Station 28 was dispatched via automatic aid to the neighboring town of Lebanon for a possible structure fire. ET-1, Ladder 1,and T-1 rolled out of the house with-in minutes of the tone. Caption Brown arrived just ahead of the first arriving units and finds smoke coming from the ā€œCā€ and ā€œDā€ sides of the building. First due ET-128 lead by Lt. Phillips advanced a line down a flight of stairs and located the room of origin. The fire was quickly put to rest. LT. Giudice was riding officer of L-128 and led his crew handling first due truck company operations (vent, search, overhaul) along with help from second due Ladder 126. A quick response ensured the fire was contained to the room of origin and there was no extension. (Pic from FF Bill, Bozrah FD)

Station 28 was also dispatched to Salem for a working garage fire and provided the watersupply and manpower. Pictures can be viwed at http://easternctfire.blogspot.com/

While Station 28 units were taking up from the Salem fire they were dispatched to the town of Hebron for another reported structure fire. ET-128 and HT-128 responded from Salem to Hebron, which is on the other side of Colchester. When Hebron units arrived on the scene they found a working fire in a corner of a large abandoned mill. ET-1 and Ladder 1 crews were put to work to assist Station 10 members. The fire was quickly put under control. This was 28's fourth fire in four days!!

Paid Guys Handle Bathroom Fire

Colchester career firefighters handled a residential bathroom fire today. The occupant apparently found the need to light a big stinky candle in her bathroom (hmmm, possibly an IDLH environment to begin with) which found its way to a towel and worked up the wall into the cabinets. Easy work, units returned in about an hour. Just in time to take in a couple of crashes, a handful of medical transports, and a few alarms (11 calls total).... fun times! I'll see if one of the day guys took pictures.

Smells & Bells

Slow week, so I thought I would throw out some pictures of some previous incidents
Taking a moment to reflect after an aggressive interior stop at this job on Old Hebron Rd. I was sitting in the nozzle seat on the 1st due engine for this fire. We tapped the hydrant directly across the street and stretched a dry line in the front door while our Captain performed a rapid primary search. Unfortunatly, I forgot to flake the line out properly before making the push and little to my knowledge left a huge knot in the hose right outside the door. You can see the level where smoke and fire banked down on top of us as we tried to figure out why we had no water. We eventually figured it out and made the push (note the holes in the sheetrock from the smooth bore).

Capt. Brown and FF. Albert keep their skills sharp on this 'well drilling' truck rollover with driver pinned. This was a delicate tool job with the driver pinned beneath tons of steel in a very unconventional vehicle.
Just a car fire with fuel tank rupture

This is what happens when you role the dice with LPG. This call generated national media attention for several days with supporting agencies assisting CHFD (FBI, ATF, etc.)

Extrication: Route 2 Exit 18

After taking up from operating in Hebron, Colchester Rescue 1 was dispatched to Route 2 for the accident w/ injuries. Due to conflicting reports, ET-128 arrived first due reporting a 2 car w/ entrapment and established command, a safe traffic flow and deployed a protective line. Rescue 1 arrived moments later and immediately went to work stabilizing the vehicle, providing PT care and removing the crushed driver side door. The patient was delivered to awaiting R 6-28/Lifestar in under 9 minutes.

In other news, this was the 12th call of the day for CHFD volunteers. Additionally during this time, most of our active department were enjoying themselves at the third annual CHFD pig roast. A definite fun time was had by all who attended and took a much deserved break from FD life. Pictures of the crash and Pig Roast will soon be posted.

Technical Haz-Mat Incident (8/5/06)

CHFD responded to an LPG incident in Hebron. Upon arrival, ET-328 was briefed by Hebron Command who informed the crew that a resident had inadvertently drilled through a full 250lb LPG tank against the building with an active leak. CHFD took Operations (FF Lee) and worked with Hebron putting several protective lines in place. A technical crew from Colchester then was able to offensivly approach the tank, deploy a plug and strap to the leaking tank and assist the propane company with removal of the tank.
